In a groundbreaking move, the Caribbean island of Dominica has announced the establishment of the world’s first marine protected area for the endangered sperm whale. Covering nearly 300 square miles on the western side of the island, this reserve aims to safeguard crucial nursing and feeding grounds for these majestic creatures, with potential benefits in the fight against climate change.

Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of sperm whales and emphasized their role in maintaining the health of the ocean and climate. Scientists believe that sperm whales, known for defecating near the surface, contribute to plankton blooms that capture carbon dioxide, mitigating climate change effects.

The reserve, protecting an estimated 500 sperm whales in the waters surrounding Dominica, will address various threats such as ship collisions, fishing gear entanglement, and agricultural runoff. The move is crucial for the survival of the sperm whale population, especially given their matrilineal society and the challenges they face in the region.

Shane Gero, a whale biologist and founder of the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, highlighted the unique characteristics of sperm whales in Dominica, suggesting they may play a significant role in fighting climate change. The reserve will allow sustainable artisanal fishing and establish an international shipping lane to prevent further harm to sperm whales.

Upon the reserve’s creation, the government plans to appoint officers and observers to enforce regulations and ensure responsible whale tourism. Although visitors can still engage in limited swimming and boat-based whale watching, the protective measures aim to strike a balance between conservation and sustainable tourism.

The decision to create the marine protected area received praise from scientists and conservationists, recognizing Dominica’s commitment to treating sperm whales as essential citizens of the island.
