The Brazilian Amazon is facing devastation due to climate change. The drought is causing low water levels, which is cutting off entire populations and hindering transportation through rivers. This crisis is especially threatening the survival of the tribes in the region, impacting their access to food. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is working to combat this issue with its new Plan for Food Security, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication in Latin America and the Caribbean. The initiative, presented by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), aims to address current and future food challenges. Mario Lubetkin, the FAO’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, stated that the issue of food insecurity has become a top priority globally, alongside the climate crisis. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is also advocating for global hunger alleviation from his leadership position in the G20. The FAO recently released its Regional Food Security Outlook report for Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting some signs of improvement in the hunger scenario, especially in South America. However, the situation remains dire for millions of people in the region. The Caribbean is facing challenges related to the lack of recovery in the tourism industry, resulting in economic hardships and increased obesity rates due to lower-quality food purchases. FAO’s strategy to combat these challenges includes a goal of producing 25% of food in the Caribbean and addressing the hidden costs in the food system that contribute to malnutrition and obesity. Despite some improvements, the report indicates high rates of stunted growth in children and adult obesity in the region.
