James missed the World Cup due to knee problems and has just returned to club football after a long hamstring injury. Southgate understood James’ decision but pointed out the intense competition for the right-back position. He also mentioned Aaron Ramsdale’s need for regular game time in order to secure a spot in the Euros squad. Ramsdale’s prospects depend on regaining the No 1 role at Arsenal or making a transfer in January. Regarding Raheem Sterling, a high-profile absentee from the squad, Southgate has left him out of the England squad for the last four matches and it may be unlikely for him to make the Euros squad unless things change.
