RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University’s baseball team wrapped up fall practice with the annual Fall World Series. The Maroon team won the series over the Black team 2-1.The Maroon team won game one of the series 11-1 on Thursday and then clinched the series with a 7-1 victory in game two on Friday. The Black team avoided the sweep with a 1-0 shutout in the finale on Sunday.
With Maroon ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Max Williams hit a 2-run home run over the wall in right field. The Black team cut it to 3-1 in the top of the second on a solo shot by Ehinger Adrianza, but that is as close as they would get.
Williams added a RBI triple in the bottom of the second. Maroon added four more in the third, including a two-run double by Justin Carinci. Williams finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a run and four RBIs. Newcomer Colby Ott had a 3-for-3 game with two runs and an RBI for Maroon. Carinci went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs in the win. Jack Waters pitched two and one-third innings of scoreless relief for Maroon. He walked one and struck out three.
Adrianza was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI for the Black team.
Elijah Underhill’s 2-run home run in the top of the first inning of game two staked the Maroon team to an early lead and the squad then pulled away with five runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Carinci had another 2-run double in the second game, this time in the top of the fifth to make it a 5-0 lead.
Black scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Julius Scearce drew a bases loaded walk.
Carinci finished game two 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Santiago Peralta walked twice, scored twice, had one hit and one RBI. Freshman Josiah Erd started for Maroon and pitched two and one-third innings without allowing a hit. Ryker Walton pitched two hitless innings of relief.
Scearce finished with three walks and an RBI for the Black team.
Both teams strung together strong pitching performances in the finale. A RBI single from Scearce in the top of the first was all the Black team would need.
Four pitchers combined for the shutout. Nathan Lawson started and tossed three innings without allowing a hit or a walk. He struck out four. Luke Reed pitched two innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out five of the nine batters he faced. Gavin Faulkner pitched two-thirds of an inning. Bryce Travis covered the final inning and one-third to earn the save.
Rian Yates started for the Maroon team and pitched three innings. He allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two. Rese Brown had two scoreless innings of relief. Aidan Rath and Ryan Radcliff pitched the final two innings.
Ron Franklin Jr. was the only player in the game to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 for Black.
For the series, Ott led the Maroon squad with a .500 batting average, finishing 4-for-8 with a home run, a triple, one RBI and three runs scored in three games. Peralta scored four runs and drew four walks in three games. Carinci finished 5-for-11 (.455) with four runs, three doubles and five RBIs. He slugged .727.
Brown made two pitching appearances for Maroon. He did not allow a run in three innings, gave up one hit, no walks and struck out two.
Franklin led Black with a .333 average and two stolen bases. Scearce had a team-best two RBIs and drew three walks.
