TEL AVIV, Israel — A group of runners gathered in Tel Aviv’s Jaffa Port early Saturday morning to run in support of the hostages still held by Hamas. Each runner wore Israeli flags or a race bib with the words “Bring them home” and the images and names of the individuals taken by Hamas. Later that evening, demonstrations were held in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, both in support of the hostages and criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for their handling of the attack. At a rally in Tel Aviv, makeshift memorials were erected to honor those still missing. The events marked one month since the attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,400 people. Margalit Zur, a 77-year-old Israeli woman, expressed her concern for the kidnapped children and babies and called for their immediate return. The intensifying military response by Israel to the Hamas attack has led to the death of almost 10,000 people in Gaza and a severe humanitarian crisis. There is no end in sight to the ongoing war, as Netanyahu rejects calls for a cease-fire. Palestinians in Gaza have suffered the biggest losses, with thousands killed and injured, and hospitals and refugee camps being targeted in Israeli airstrikes. The World Health Organization has documented numerous attacks on healthcare facilities, leaving hospitals overcrowded and functioning at a minimal level due to low supplies and fuel. The situation poses particular risks for pregnant women and children. Diplomatic efforts to broker a deal for humanitarian aid and protection of civilians have shown little progress. While efforts were made to allow aid to enter and some individuals to leave Gaza, exit points have been closed, leaving many trapped inside. Aid has been slowly entering Gaza, but there are calls for more supplies to reach Palestinians. Amidst the ongoing violence, calls for a cease-fire have grown, with protests taking place globally. The Biden administration continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself, and although there are concerns over the high casualty count in Gaza, few lawmakers have publicly called for a pause in the fight. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has expressed concerns over Israel’s response to Hamas and called for a more deliberate and proportionate counterterrorism campaign.
