Some California cities are known for their historical and cultural attractions, but Los Angeles often gets left out of that discussion. However, many of Southern California’s popular landmarks still exist today because of the efforts of Los Angeles. For example, St. Vibiana’s Cathedral, which was on the verge of being demolished, is now a thriving events center. The former Los Angeles Herald Examiner building, where I used to work, has been transformed into a satellite campus for Arizona State University. There is even a fight to preserve the bungalow where Marilyn Monroedied. In a region known for its focus on growth, preserving these properties has not been an easy task.
