A suspect driving through city streets in an attempt to evade the police has the ability to lower an opaque screen over their car’s license plate with the press of a button. This device, which seems straight out of a cartoon, is actually a real product that can be purchased online for around $50. However, it is illegal to use or sell such a gadget in California. Despite this, individuals continue to sell various products that are designed to obscure license plate numbers on popular online marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart, eBay, and Etsy. The San Francisco city attorney, David Chiu, plans to demand that these companies remove the products from their websites due to their association with illegal activity. These gadgets include remote-controlled devices, vinyl wraps, and cloudy screens that make license plate numbers impossible to read. They can be used to avoid bridge tolls, red-light cameras, and speed enforcement cameras. Chiu’s decision to take action against these devices was prompted by the frustration expressed by the police chief of San Francisco, Bill Scott, regarding their availability on Amazon. Chiu hopes that the four companies will voluntarily remove the products, but has not specified what he will do if they do not comply.
