Philly Poison Control Center issues warning about consuming wild mushrooms, following a tragic incident in Australia. On July 29, three guests died and a local preacher was left fighting for his life after consuming mushrooms at a luncheon hosted by Erin Patterson. The police executed a search warrant at Patterson’s home in Leongatha. Only Ian Wilkinson, the local pastor, survived but spent nearly two months in the hospital. Homicide detectives plan to interview Patterson as part of their investigation. Patterson has denied any wrongdoing and expressed devastation at the possibility that the mushrooms may have caused harm to her loved ones. The symptoms exhibited by the victims are consistent with poisoning by death cap mushrooms, which are commonly mistaken for edible mushrooms. Death caps are responsible for the majority of mushroom poisoning cases worldwide. Patterson stated that she used mushrooms purchased from a major supermarket chain and dried mushrooms from an Asian grocery store to prepare a Beef Wellington dish. Investigations are ongoing.
