Erin Patterson was arrested and charged with multiple murders on Thursday. She was seen arriving at her home in Leongatha, Victoria, in August. The case revolves around a real murder case in a small Australian town where three people died after consuming a meal suspected to contain poisonous death cap mushrooms. The main suspect, Erin Patterson, hosted the lunch in late July, and her four guests fell gravely ill. Patterson is now charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. Despite intense media scrutiny, she maintains her innocence. The victims of the case were Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Heather Wilkinson, 66. Ian Wilkinson, 69, Heather’s husband, fell sick but recovered. A fifth victim, a 48-year-old man, is believed to be Simon Patterson, Erin’s estranged husband. The deaths occurred after a week-long hospitalization. Patterson claims she also ate the beef Wellington and became ill. The case has generated public curiosity, as death cap mushrooms cause severe symptoms and are extremely poisonous. The Victorian government warns that consuming just one mushroom can be fatal. Symptoms include intense stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The toxins can also cause serious liver damage.
