Louis Oliver Gropp, an influential figure in the world of shelter magazines, passed away on October 17 at his residence in Greenport, N.Y. Gropp, who served as editor in chief for House & Garden, Elle Decor, and House Beautiful, was 88 years old at the time of his death. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
In 1981, Gropp was selected by Condé Nast Publications to lead the renovation of House & Garden, an 80-year-old decorating magazine. At the time, the publication catered to a middle-class audience, covering subjects such as recipes, DIY decorating, and handicrafts. However, Gropp recognized the increasing appeal of the luxury market and decided to revamp the magazine accordingly. The newly relaunched House & Garden in 1983 adopted a more elegant, highbrow style, targeting affluent readers and featuring homes and lifestyles of cultural icons and celebrities.
Gropp, known for his adaptability and support of others’ visions, guided House & Garden to win two National Magazine Awards for design and general excellence in 1984. However, in 1987, the magazine’s new owners, Alexander Liberman and S.I. Newhouse, dismissed Gropp amidst a wave of firings at Condé Nast. Gropp remained unfazed and continued his successful career as the editor of Elle Decor and House Beautiful until his retirement in 2000.
Gropp’s impact in the shelter magazine industry was widely recognized. Known for his credibility, gravitas, and genuine personality, Gropp was often compared to Walter Cronkite in his field. His thoughtful approach to design coverage earned him a place in Interior Design magazine’s Design Hall of Fame in 1993. His wife, two daughters, and five grandchildren survive him.
