The monthlong meeting convened by Pope Francis to discuss the future of the Roman Catholic Church ended on Saturday evening with a document that expressed urgency for women to have a larger role within the Church. However, major issues such as the ordination of women as deacons and outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics were postponed and not addressed. Vatican officials aimed to focus on common ground and unity throughout the meeting, sidestepping controversial topics. The final document disappointed progressives who were hoping for more substantial change. Nevertheless, the Synod on Synodality was viewed by some as a step forward in creating a church where clerics and lay people work closely together. The assembly will gather again next year to present recommendations to Pope Francis, who may issue a papal letter with concrete policy changes.
